Building Code Boardof Appeals hears appeals related to building construction, safety and code compliance with regards to building, electrical, mechanical and plumbing codes. The board consists of five members appointed by the mayor and serve
a five-year term. The board meets when required.

Board of Adjustment
Board of Adjustment conducts public hearings, reviews requests for variances and special exceptions, decide on applications by landowners to permit buildings or land uses which vary from the zoning regulations, review appeals to an administrative decision made by the City Administrator, interpret the zoning ordinance for unclear code and resolve disputes. Members are appointed by the mayor and serve a five-year term. The Board meets when required.

Parks & Recreation Board
The Parks and Recreation Board serves as an advisory body to the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission on issues related to the field of parks and recreation including any referred policy matters that pertain to park and recreation services. Members are appointed by the mayor and serve a three year term. The Commission meets when required.

Tax Increment Finance Board
The Tax Increment Finance Board assists in identifying and recommending redevelopment areas in the City and recommending improvements that are funded through TIFs. Five members are appointed by the mayor and serve a three-year term. The Commission meets when required.

Library Board of Trustess
The Kalona Public Library’s Board of Trustees meets regularly on the second Tuesday of each month at 6:00 p.m. in the Velma Skola program room in the library. The meetings are open to the public. The Board is an advocate for the library in the community and advocate for the community as a member. The Board also plans for the future of the library, and monitors and evaluates the overall effectiveness of the library. The Board also sets library policy and hires the library director.
